G-SHOCK DW-5000R: A Tribute to 40 Years of Toughness and Innovation

G-SHOCK DW-5000R: A Tribute to 40 Years of Toughness and Innovation

The First-Ever G-SHOCK Reimagined: A Testament to Innovation and Heritage

For over 40 years, G-SHOCK has remained true to its origins while continuously pushing the boundaries of innovation. On April 12, 1983, Casio revolutionized the watch industry with the launch of the first G-SHOCK—a timepiece engineered to deliver exceptional shock and vibration resistance in the most demanding environments. Designed to surpass ISO standards, the original G-SHOCK was built to endure the rigors of intense athletic activity and the relentless vibrations of power tools such as chainsaws and jackhammers. More than just a watch, it became a symbol of toughness and a game-changer that redefined the possibilities of wristwear worldwide.

Beyond its groundbreaking durability, the first G-SHOCK also made waves with its distinctive and instantly recognizable design. Honoring this legacy, Casio achieved a historic milestone in 2023 when the Japan Patent Office granted a 3D trademark for the iconic shape of the original G-SHOCK—making it the first wristwatch in Japan to receive such recognition.

As G-SHOCK continues to evolve, it remains a powerful emblem of resilience, craftsmanship, and forward-thinking design.

A vision in one short phrase

“A durable watch that would not break even if dropped” — a proposal submitted at a company meeting contained only this single line of text. The author was Kikuo Ibe, who was in charge of watch exterior design at the time. He recalls that this clear, simple idea struck him as he looked at a broken watch he had happened to drop at work one day. At the time, watches were considered precisely crafted, delicate instruments, and it was commonly accepted that your watch would break if you dropped it. The concept of toughness — in a watch — was too unconventional, too avant-garde. Still, his proposal was approved. Project Team Tough was formed with just three team members, and development of a new kind of watch began.

This single-line proposal, submitted at a company meeting, came from Kikuo Ibe, then in charge of watch exterior design. The inspiration struck him after accidentally dropping and breaking his watch at work. The idea of a tough watch was radical—too unconventional, too ahead of its time. Yet, his proposal was approved. With just three members, Project Team Tough was formed, marking the beginning of a groundbreaking innovation.

MOVIE

The DW-5000R embraces the true essence of G-SHOCK, staying faithful to its iconic roots while introducing innovative advancements. Drawing inspiration from the very first G-SHOCK model, this modern iteration combines cutting-edge Casio technology with a precise re-creation of the original design.

Just like the original, the case is crafted from stainless steel, and the band’s design is faithfully reproduced, down to the length, form, and even the position of the dimples. The case size has been subtly updated to 42.3 mm, from the original 41.6 mm.

A modern twist on tradition, the bezel and band are made from bio-based resin, maintaining the same feel as the original while reducing environmental impact. This combination honors G-SHOCK’s legacy and showcases its evolution.

Features:

Recreating the Iconic Design of the First G-SHOCK – A Milestone in Wristwatch History

Since the introduction of the G-SHOCK over 40 years ago, the brand has continually innovated and expanded its product range. The original design was a bold vision for the future, and the new DW-5000R model carries that spirit forward. This special edition blends advanced G-SHOCK technology with the original design, staying true to the watch's legacy with impressive detail.

The case is crafted from stainless steel, just like the original, and the band mirrors the original design with precision, replicating the length, form, and even the positioning of the dimples. This model marks a return to the roots of G-SHOCK, reaffirming the brand’s relentless pursuit of innovation while honoring its past.

Both the bezel and band are made from resin, just like the original, but now feature bio-based resin, a sustainable material designed to reduce environmental impact. The high-brightness LED backlight enhances readability in low-light conditions. Additionally, the case size has been updated from 41.6 mm to 42.3 mm.

Meticulously Recreating the Original Bezel Design

The bezel’s top surface displays the “PROTECTION” lettering and the “G-SHOCK” logo, carefully recreating the flat design of the original model.

Face Design with Red, Blue, and Yellow Accents

The original model’s iconic color accents are reproduced with precision: red, symbolizing the brand’s passionate commitment to pushing boundaries; blue, highlighting the exceptional water resistance; and yellow, representing the shock resistance. The face also features the signature brick pattern, emphasizing the watch’s rugged durability.

Mirror-Polished Case Back

The case back, showcasing the “Shock Resistant” lettering and screw-back design, is beautifully mirror-polished, staying true to the original’s layout. This subtle yet distinctive design element reflects the heritage and precision of the first G-SHOCK.

Note: The orientation of the case back may vary slightly from watch to watch due to the manufacturing process.

Crafted at Yamagata Casio – The “Mother Factory”

Honoring the master craftsmanship of the engineers who created the first G-SHOCK, this model is produced at Yamagata Casio’s facilities—the birthplace of G-SHOCK. The highly skilled engineers at this facility continue to uphold the tradition of excellence that defined the original.

Super Illuminator (High-Brightness LED Backlight)

The Super Illuminator ensures optimal readability, even in dark environments, allowing you to read the time easily regardless of lighting conditions.
